Being "A Part"

By Linda Gutschmidt

The other day I read I Corinthians 12:12-31 as a devotional. These verses talk about how there is One Body, but Many Parts. As a body had a foot, a hand, eyes, ears, nose, heart, lungs and so forth, each part needs to work together to keep the body functioning. Some parts are more vital to have than others but if they didn’t work together, the body would stop.

I got to thinking about how these verses affect my own life. Everyone’s life is a story. Some of these stories can be filled with excitement, trial and tribulations at every turn or just an easy flowing, steady pace. When we were each born, God placed us on different life pathways. We have each experienced different situations. Everything we have done in our life and everything that has ever touched our life has shaped us into who we are today. It amazes me that even though we each have our own pathway to travel, each pathway has led us to the main road we need to travel. It is the road that leads to Jesus Christ. Somewhere along our paths we have found Jesus Christ as our Personal Savior and Friend. Like the grapevine, each of our branches has connected with the vine.

No matter where we live, what we are experiencing in our lives, or what denomination we are a part of, it all comes down to this. As Christians, believers in Jesus Christ, the Son of God, we need each other. We can not go through life alone. We need Christ and we need fellow believers. God is a relational God. He created us to have a relationship with Him.

What do you need to do in your own life to deepen that relationship with God?

What do you need to do to deepen a relationship with other believers?

Getting into the Word of God is a good start. God gave us His word that we might know him better. He has so much to tell us. You will grow in your Christian walk in ways you may not have expected.

Praying helps you learn to talk to God. When we tell him our concerns and joys He is listening. Praying helps you learn to love your fellow man too. If you have problems with another person, try praying for them. You can only grow to love another person when you pray for them.

Fellowship with other believers will cause you to grow in your Christian walk. We can learn from each other. The older can teach the younger. As members of God’s family, we may have different interests and gifts, but we also have a common goal.

“The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all its parts are many, they form one body. So it is with Christ. Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.” (I Corinthians 12:12, 27
